Citation Management Tools

The Penn State Libraries support several Citation Management tools; for those who need to collect, organize and format research citations.

The following tools allow faculty, staff, and students, to search for and store references, as well as create in-text citations and bibliographies:

Zotero

Zotero is a free stand alone program that allows for easy capturing of citation information from web pages. Zotero is compatible with MS Word, Open Office, and Google Docs. Additionally, this program allows for unlimited local storage and data syncing and allows for 100MB free Zotero file syncing (larger syncing plans available for purchase).

Mendeley

Mendely is also a free tool for both the desktop and web that integrates with Zotero and easily manages PDFs. Compatible with MS Word, Open Office, and LaTex, Mendeley offers nliumited local storage and data syncing; 1GB personal and 100MB shared online space, and the option to purchase larger online storage plans.

EndNote

Penn State does not have a site-wide license to EndNote, but EndNote X5 is available at University Park on public Windows computers in the Pattee Library Knowledge Commons and Sidewater Commons, and in the ITS computer labs. It is not installed on public Macintosh computers at University Park. EndNote is compatible with MS Office, Open Office, and iWork Pages. It also offers unlimited local storage. EndNote Basic is only compatible with MS Office and is limited to 50,000 citations and 2 GB of attachment storage. The latest version of EndNote can be purchased at a discount for students, faculty and staff through Software @ Penn State.

RefWorks

This citation management tool integrates smoothly with LionSearch. Penn State users have free access to a "lite" version of RefWorks with limited features.
